BIOGRAPHY
João Miguel Moreira da Silva (Portugal) began studying the oboe at the age of nine, inspired by a family deeply rooted in music — his father and sister are both clarinetists. He studied in Lisbon with Óscar Viana and Luís Marques at the Lisbon Music Conservatory. He continued his education in Germany, completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Music and Dance Cologne under the guidance of Christian Wetzel.
After his time in Germany, João moved to Switzerland to study with Jean-Louis Capezzali at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne. He later completed his master’s degree with François Leleux at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München.
João is a laureate of numerous competitions in Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Poland, which have provided him with opportunities to perform as a soloist with renowned orchestras, including the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Zabrze Philharmonic Orchestra, and Orquestra Clássica da Madeira.
As an orchestral musician, João has performed as guest principal oboist with some of the world’s leading ensembles, such as the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Staatskapelle Dresden, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, SWR Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others.
During the 2015–2016 season, João was an academy member of the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln. He served as Co-Principal Oboe of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and, since November 2025, has been Co-Principal Oboe of the Göteborg Symfoniker.
In 2024, João won Second Prize and the Award for Best Interpretation of the Commissioned Work at the Internationaler Instrumentalwettbewerb Markneukirchen. Later that year, he was awarded Third Prize, the Audience Prize, and the Brüder-Busch Prize at the prestigious ARD International Music Competition.
